Monsoon in Overdrive: Heavy Rain Set to Drench Large Parts of India on Wednesday
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

On Wednesday, August 12, 2026 the southwest monsoon still likely to be remaining very strong overmany parts of India and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had announced here that heavy/very heavy rainfall would occur at several places with isolated extremely heavy falls occuring in a few pockets.

The monsoon is likely to stay in full vigour in the north and central regions, on account of a low-pressure area over northern and eastern India while periods of intense activity may also lash the western coast and parts of south based on another ranging feature that sit over Arabian Sea.

The IMD has also warned of flooding, landslides and disruption to travel in area likely to be affected: be careful all residents and visitors: follow local alerts nearby flood being low-lying.

Where the heaviest rain is expected

North and northwest India

  • East Rajasthan: Likely to see the most intense spell, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall forecast. This region is expected to receive the highest rainfall totals on Wednesday.
  • Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi: Heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
  • Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir: Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations, with an elevated risk of flash floods and landslides in hilly terrain.
  • West Uttar Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh: Isolated heavy to very heavy showers, with potential for waterlogging in urban areas.

West and central India

  • Gujarat and Odisha: Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, with some coastal and tribal districts more prone to flooding.
  • Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha: The low-pressure system is expected to maintain vigorous monsoon activity, with heavy to very heavy rain and isolated extremely heavy falls in parts of these states.

East and northeast India

  • Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha and Uttarakhand: Very heavy rainfall at isolated places, raising concerns for river levels and flash floods in hill districts.
  • Assam and Meghalaya: Heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy falls on Wednesday. Flood-prone districts in the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys are particularly at risk.
  • Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura: Isolated heavy rainfall expected, with continued wet conditions over the next several days.

South India and west coast

  • Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra: Isolated very heavy rainfall along the west coast, with strong monsoon winds enhancing orographic rainfall over the Western Ghats.
  • Kerala and Mahe, Coastal Karnataka: Widespread rain with isolated heavy to very heavy showers, and a risk of localised flooding in low-lying coastal belts.
  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh: Isolated heavy rainfall over the next few days, with thunderstorms and gusty winds in some areas.

Weather systems driving the heavy rain

The intense Wednesday forecast is being driven by a combination of factors:

  • A well-marked low-pressure area over central/eastern India, which enhances moisture convergence and uplift, leading to widespread convection and heavy showers.
  • Strong southwesterly monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, feeding abundant moisture into the subcontinent.
  • Orographic effects along the Western Ghats and Himalayan foothills, where moist air is forced upwards, cooling and condensing into heavy rain bands.

In some regions, particularly the west coast and northeast, the interaction between monsoon flow and local topography is expected to produce very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over short periods, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides.

Alerts and risks: Floods, landslides, travel disruption

The IMD and state disaster management authorities have flagged several key risks for Wednesday:

  • Urban flooding in major cities and towns across north, central and west India, especially where drainage systems are already stressed from earlier rains.
  • Flash floods and landslides in hilly and mountainous regions, including parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya.
  • River flooding in basins such as the Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Narmada and Tapi, where upstream heavy rain can quickly raise water levels downstream.
  • Travel disruptions on highways, railways and air routes, with potential delays and cancellations in states experiencing very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Residents in vulnerable districts have been advised to:

  • Avoid travelling through waterlogged roads, swollen streams and landslide-prone stretches.
  • Stay updated with local IMD bulletins, district administration alerts and flood forecasts.
  • Keep emergency supplies ready, including medicines, dry food, torches and charged mobile phones.

What this means for the monsoon season

The heavy rain forecast for Wednesday comes at a time when the monsoon is already in an active phase across much of the country. Recent weeks have seen:

  • Above-normal rainfall in several central and northern states, helping reduce earlier deficits.
  • Persistent wet spells over the west coast, northeast and parts of the Himalayas, with repeated heavy rain events.

Though these active phases are important for kharif cultivation and building up storage in reservoirs, they increase the hazard of weather-related disasters if rainfall is intense or concentrated in short spans.

Meteorologists say what happens in the pattern over the next few days will be critical to whether or not the monsoon finally settles into a less muscular rhythm, or if it maintains producing episodic extreme events that push emergency response systems and infrastructure to their limits.

Practical advice for Wednesday

  • Check local forecasts before stepping out, especially if you live in or are travelling to Rajasthan, Delhi-NCR, Himachal, Uttarakhand, the northeast, Konkan-Goa or coastal Karnataka.
  • Avoid low-lying areas and known flood hotspots; do not attempt to cross waterlogged roads or bridges.
  • Plan travel buffers: expect possible delays on flights, trains and long-distance buses in states under heavy rain warnings.
  • Follow official channels: IMD’s website and app, state disaster management authorities, and local news outlets for real-time updates and evacuation advisories if issued.

As the monsoon “cruises” at high intensity on Wednesday, the emphasis for authorities and citizens alike is on preparedness, caution and timely response to minimise damage and keep people safe.
