India’s Growth Gets a Boost as RBI Keeps Its Options Open

A stronger growth outlook gives India fresh momentum, while the RBI signals it will let incoming data guide its next policy moves.

India’s Growth Gets a Boost as RBI Keeps Its Options Open
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

India’s growth outlook has been revised higher by major institutions even as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) keeps its policy stance firmly data‑dependent, signaling that the central bank will not pre‑emptively tighten or ease unless incoming data on inflation and growth clearly warrant it. The combination of an upgraded GDP forecast and a cautious, flexible policy stance underscores a key message for 2026: India’s economy is seen as resilient, but policymakers are not taking growth or inflation for granted.

Growth Forecasts: Who Has Raised What?

IMF: 6.5% for FY27

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lifted India’s GDP growth forecast for FY27 (2026–27) to 6.5%, up from 6.4% earlier, while retaining the same pace for FY28.

Key points from the IMF’s April 2026 World Economic Outlook:

  • FY26 (2025–26) growth estimate revised sharply to 7.3%, reflecting:
    • Better‑than‑expected outturns in Q3 and Q4 of FY26
    • Strong momentum in the fourth quarter, with GDP growth hitting 8.2% YoY in Q3 FY26.
  • FY27 and FY28 growth projected at 6.5%, still making India the fastest‑growing major economy even as global growth slows.

The IMF cited:

  • Carryover from strong FY26 performance
  • Lower additional US tariffs on Indian goods (from 50% to 10%) improving export prospects
  • Robust domestic consumption and investment momentum

RBI: 6.7% for FY27

The RBI, in its August 2026 monetary policy, went a step further:

  • Raised FY27 real GDP growth forecast to 6.7%, up 10 basis points from 6.6% in June.
  • Projected Q1 FY27 growth at 7.0%, indicating a strong start to the fiscal year.

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra emphasized that growth is being supported by:

  • Resilient domestic demand
  • Continued public capex
  • Signs of private investment recovery

Other Agencies: World Bank, ADB, Fitch

  • World Bank: Lifted FY26 growth to 7.2% on strong domestic demand and tax reforms, while keeping FY27 around 6.3–6.5% in various updates.
  • ADB: Raised FY26 forecast to 7.2%, citing strong consumption, tax cuts, and robust Q2 performance.
  • Fitch: Upgraded FY26 to 6.9% (later to 7.4% in some updates) on strong services activity and resilient consumption.

The consensus: India’s growth trajectory is stronger than previously expected, even as global headwinds persist.

Why Forecasts Are Being Revised Up

Several factors explain the upward revisions:

1. Stronger‑Than‑Expected Domestic Demand

  • Private consumption has held up better than feared, supported by:
    • Improved rural incomes and agricultural output
    • Steady urban employment and wage growth in key sectors
  • Services sector activity remains robust, with strength in IT, finance, tourism, and business services.

2. Investment Momentum

  • Government capex on infrastructure continues to be a major anchor.
  • Private capex is showing early signs of recovery, supported by:
    • Healthy capacity utilization
    • Strong credit growth to industry and services.

3. External Sector Resilience

  • Services exports have expanded healthily, offsetting some weakness in global goods trade.
  • Merchandise exports have rebounded, aided by trade agreements and market diversification.
  • Foreign exchange reserves are adequate, providing a buffer against external shocks.

4. Policy Support

  • Fiscal consolidation is proceeding without derailing growth, with targeted spending on infrastructure and social programs.
  • Monetary policy has been supportive, with the repo rate at 5.25% and a neutral stance that allows flexibility.

Policy Stance: “Data‑Dependent” Is the Key Phrase

While growth forecasts are being upgraded, the RBI’s policy stance remains cautiously neutral and data‑dependent:

  • Repo rate: Held at 5.25% for the fourth consecutive meeting.
  • Stance: “Neutral”, meaning the MPC is open to moving rates either way depending on how inflation and growth evolve.

Why Not Tighten Despite Higher Growth?

The RBI’s reasoning, as reflected in its statement and media coverage:

  • Inflation is the binding constraint, not growth.
    • CPI inflation is above the 4% target but within the 2–6% band.
    • The central bank sees inflation peaking in Q3 FY27 at 5.9%, then easing.
  • Growth is resilient but not overheating.
    • There is no evidence of broad‑based demand‑pull inflation or a wage‑price spiral.
  • External risks (West Asia, oil, global trade) could still derail growth or push inflation higher.

By staying data‑dependent, the RBI retains the option to:

  • Cut rates if growth slows and inflation eases faster than expected.
  • Hike rates if inflation proves stickier or external shocks intensify.

What This Means for Markets, Businesses, and Households

For Markets

  • Equities: A higher growth outlook supports earnings expectations, especially in domestic‑demand‑oriented sectors (banks, autos, consumer goods, infrastructure).
  • Bonds: A data‑dependent stance and contained core inflation suggest that rate hikes are not imminent, but yields will remain sensitive to oil and food inflation data.

For Businesses

  • Capex and expansion plans can proceed with greater confidence, given the upgraded growth path and policy flexibility.
  • However, firms must remain alert to input cost volatility (oil, food, logistics) that could squeeze margins in Q3 FY27.

For Households

  • Employment and income growth are underpinned by strong domestic activity, though external shocks can still affect certain sectors (IT exports, commodity‑linked industries).
  • Inflation, especially in food and fuel, remains the most visible channel through which global headwinds can impact household budgets.

Risks That Could Derail the Upbeat Narrative

Despite the raised forecasts, the RBI and other agencies flag several risks:

  • West Asia conflict escalation – could spike oil prices and disrupt shipping.
  • Global supply chain disruptions – especially in energy, semiconductors, and critical inputs.
  • Monsoon variability – a weaker or uneven monsoon could keep food prices elevated and hurt rural demand.
  • Financial market volatility – which could trigger capital outflows and rupee depreciation.

If these risks materialize strongly, growth could undershoot forecasts and inflation could stay elevated, forcing a policy rethink.
