India’s Growth Engine Roars as Factories and Construction Surge
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Manufacturing and construction activity, along with good growth in capital goods, infrastructure & core sectors, were the primary drivers of economic expansion in Q1 FY27 (April–June 2026) despite sluggishness in some other segments. First‑principles and high‑frequency data, including the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), Index of Core Industries (ICI) & corporate earnings, paint a relatively simple picture—factories and construction sectors lead Q1 growth engines while global uncertainties weigh on margins amid cost pressures.

Q1 FY27: The Big Picture

While the official national accounts (GDP) data for Q1 FY27 are still being finalized, multiple indicators point to robust underlying growth:

  • GDP growth estimates for Q1 FY27:
    • RBI projects around 7.0% for Q1 FY27, with full‑year FY27 growth at 6.7%.
    • Independent estimates (e.g., ICRA) place Q1 growth in the 6.4–6.6% range, driven by strong economic activity.
  • Industrial output (IIP):
    • Q1 FY27 IIP growth: 5.8% YoY, with manufacturing expanding 6.3% and electricity & gas up 8.6%.
    • June 2026 IIP: 7.3% YoY, a near two‑year high, led by manufacturing at 7.8%.
  • Core industries:
    • Index of Core Industries (ICI) grew 5.0% YoY in June 2026, up from 3.2% in May, driven by iron ore, electricity, cement, and steel.

These data collectively underline that manufacturing and construction‑linked activity have been the primary contributors to Q1 momentum.

Manufacturing: The Main Growth Driver

Output and Sectoral Performance

Manufacturing, which accounts for over three‑fourths of the IIP, showed clear acceleration through Q1:

  • Q1 FY27 manufacturing growth: 6.3% YoY.
  • June 2026 manufacturing growth: 7.8% YoY, up from 5.2% in May, with 19 of 23 sub‑sectors posting gains.

Key manufacturing sub‑sectors with double‑digit or strong growth in June include:

  • Electrical equipment: +34% YoY
  • Motor vehicles, trailers, and semi‑trailers: +17.5% YoY
  • Textiles: +13.7% YoY
  • Food products: +10.8% YoY
  • Other non‑metallic mineral products: +12.9% YoY

On a use‑based classification:

  • Capital goods: +14.2% YoY in June, indicating healthy investment and capex activity.
  • Intermediate goods: +9.3% YoY
  • Infrastructure & construction goods: +7.5% YoY
  • Consumer durables: +7.7% YoY

Drivers of Manufacturing Growth

Several factors have supported manufacturing in Q1:

  • Strong domestic demand:
    • Auto sales (passenger vehicles, two‑wheelers, commercial vehicles) remained robust.
    • Consumer durables and electrical appliances saw healthy offtake.
  • Capex and infrastructure push:
    • High growth in capital goods and infrastructure/construction goods points to sustained investment in plants, machinery, and projects.
  • Export resilience in some segments:
    • Despite West Asia tensions and global trade uncertainty, export sentiment improved in several manufacturing categories, aided by market diversification.

However, there are caveats:

  • Input cost pressures:
    • Higher crude, logistics, and raw material costs due to West Asia conflict have squeezed margins in some sectors.
  • Sequential moderation:
    • Some indicators show slower growth in new orders and output on a month‑to‑month basis, reflecting cautious business sentiment amid geopolitical risks.

Construction and Infrastructure: The Other Pillar

While manufacturing leads on the factory side, construction and infrastructure‑linked activity have been equally critical in driving Q1 growth.

Core Industries and Construction Goods

The Index of Core Industries (ICI)—which covers eight key sectors including cement, steel, electricity, and coal—showed broad‑based strength:

  • ICI growth in June 2026: 5.0% YoY (provisional), up from 3.2% in May.
  • Key contributors:
    • Iron ore: +43.9% YoY
    • Electricity: +9.8% YoY
    • Cement: +9.8% YoY
    • Steel: +4.6% YoY
    • Coal: +1.4% YoY (back to positive growth)

These sectors are direct proxies for infrastructure and construction activity. Strong performance in cement, steel, and electricity signals sustained momentum in:

  • Roads, railways, ports, and urban infrastructure projects
  • Real estate (residential and commercial)
  • Industrial construction and plant setup

Construction Goods in IIP

On the IIP’s use‑based classification:

  • Infrastructure & construction goods output:
    • +5.9% YoY in May 2026
    • +7.5% YoY in June 2026

This acceleration aligns with:

  • Healthy order books for engineering and construction firms (e.g., L&T’s order book up 27% YoY in Q1 FY27).
  • Continued government capex on infrastructure and sustained private project execution where orders have already been won.

That said, revenue growth for construction companies has been more muted (1–3% YoY) in Q1, as geopolitical disruptions and execution delays slowed project progress and revenue recognition despite strong order inflows.

Corporate Earnings: Pricing Power Over Volume

Early Q1 FY27 earnings data reinforce the picture of growth led by manufacturing and construction, but with margin pressure from higher input costs.

Revenue and Profit Growth

  • India Inc revenue growth (Q1 FY27): Estimated at 11–11.5% YoY, the fastest pace in two years.
  • Profit growth: Healthy double‑digit, supported by strong domestic demand and price hikes.

Sectoral highlights:

  • Automobiles: One of the strongest contributors, aided by:
    • GST‑led demand momentum
    • Healthy PV, CV, and two‑wheeler sales
    • Export growth and selective price increases
  • Metals, cement, chemicals, tyres, fertilizers, gems & jewellery:
    • Better realizations (prices) accounted for a larger share of revenue growth than volume.
  • Construction:
    • A relative laggard in terms of revenue growth (1–3% YoY) due to:
      • Project execution delays
      • Geopolitical disruptions affecting timelines and revenue recognition
    • However, order books remain healthy, suggesting better revenue visibility in H2.

Margins Under Pressure

  • Input and logistics costs have risen due to:
    • Elevated crude and energy prices linked to West Asia tensions
    • Supply chain disruptions in some segments
  • Many companies have managed to pass on costs via price hikes, but not all sectors can do so fully, leading to margin compression in some cases.

How This Fits Into the RBI and Government’s Growth Narrative

The Q1 FY27 data align closely with the RBI’s and Finance Ministry’s assessments:

  • RBI:
    • Projects Q1 FY27 GDP growth around 7.0%, supported by resilient domestic demand and investment activity.
    • Highlights manufacturing and infrastructure as key pillars of growth.
  • Finance Ministry (Monthly Economic Review, July 2026):
    • Notes that the Indian economy sustained growth momentum in Q1 FY27 despite global uncertainty.
    • Emphasizes broad‑based strength in core industries (iron ore, electricity, cement, steel) as evidence of sustained infrastructure and construction activity.

The narrative is consistent: manufacturing and construction are leading the cycle, while consumption remains resilient but not overheated.

Risks and Watch‑Outs for H2 FY27

Despite the strong Q1, several risks could affect the trajectory:

  • West Asia conflict:
    • Further escalation could push crude and input costs higher, hurting margins and potentially dampening demand.
  • Global trade uncertainty:
    • New tariffs or trade barriers could impact export‑oriented manufacturing segments.
  • Monsoon and rural demand:
    • An uneven monsoon could affect agricultural output, rural incomes, and demand for consumer goods and construction materials.
  • Execution bottlenecks in construction:
    • Land acquisition, regulatory delays, and cost overruns could slow the translation of strong order books into actual output and revenue.
