The annual Muhurat session marks the start of the new Hindu calendar year. Its ceremonial tradition does not predict market performance.

Diwali Muhurat Trading 2026: NSE and BSE Hold Special Session
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

India’s stock exchanges scheduled a special Diwali Muhurat trading session for Sunday, November 8, to mark the beginning of Vikram Samvat 2083. The National Stock Exchange and BSE announced the annual session despite Sunday normally being a non-trading day.

For non-Closing Auction Session securities, continuous trading was scheduled from 2:20 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The pre-open order-entry period was listed for 2:05 p.m. to 2:15 p.m., followed by order matching before the market opened.

The session also included separate windows for different market activities. According to CNBC-TV18’s schedule, the block deal session was planned from 1:50 p.m. to 2:05 p.m. IPOs and relisted securities had their own pre-open and continuous trading periods, while illiquid securities used a call-auction window.

The annual session has a ceremonial place in India’s market calendar. Investors and brokers may place symbolic trades to mark Diwali and the start of the new financial year in the Hindu calendar. It is a long-running tradition, but the auspicious timing does not guarantee gains or predict how markets will perform afterward.

The schedule also has operational details that differ from an ordinary trading day. Exchange rules, order types and settlement procedures still apply. Investors who took part needed to check with their broker about transaction charges, order handling and settlement timing.

The session followed a mixed year for Indian equities. CNBC-TV18 reported that the Nifty and Sensex ended the outgoing Samvat lower, while some broader and sectoral indices posted gains. Those figures describe past performance; they do not determine the direction of the new year.

Market performance can reflect many factors, including company earnings, interest rates, inflation, global events, investor flows and expectations about economic growth. A special one-hour session is too short to establish a trend. Symbolic buying may be meaningful to participants, but it should be separated from an assessment of an investment’s risks and fundamentals.

For retail investors, the practical considerations are the same as on other trading days. Orders should match the investor’s plan, time horizon and risk tolerance. Investors should avoid treating a festival session as a reason to buy securities without understanding the company or instrument involved.

Muhurat trading is also a reminder of the cultural traditions surrounding India’s financial markets. The session brings brokers and investors to the exchange at a time that is meaningful to many families and businesses. Its special status does not change the underlying nature of market risk.

Investors who missed the session can still review exchange notices and market data after trading concludes. The next normal trading day will provide a broader view of price movements and liquidity. For longer-term decisions, company performance and portfolio goals remain more useful guides than the outcome of a single ceremonial session.
