Zoho adds a pronunciation feature to its Arattai messaging app

Zoho has added a small feature to its Arattai messaging app to help users pronounce the app’s name. Founder Sridhar Vembu said users can double-tap the app’s logo to hear the pronunciation.

The update follows questions from users who were unsure how to say “Arattai,” a Tamil word.

The change is a modest one, but it responds to a practical issue that can arise when a product uses a name from a language unfamiliar to some of its audience.

A name with a local meaning

Arattai is a messaging app developed by Zoho, the Indian software company known for business and productivity tools. The app’s name comes from Tamil, and its pronunciation has drawn attention as the service reaches users who may not speak the language.

The new interaction uses the app logo itself. A double tap plays the pronunciation, giving people a quick way to hear the name without searching for an explanation elsewhere.

The feature also shows how product details can become part of a company’s public identity. A name can express a brand’s cultural roots, but it may also create uncertainty for new users if they have not encountered it before.

Small interface choices can reduce friction

App makers often focus on major functions such as messaging, file sharing and account security. Yet small interface decisions can influence whether users feel comfortable with a product.

A pronunciation cue is not a translation feature, nor does it change how the messaging service works. It simply offers an audio reference at the point where a user interacts with the app icon.

For users who are unfamiliar with Tamil, hearing the word may make it easier to remember and discuss the app. For Tamil speakers, it can also reinforce the intended pronunciation of a name that might otherwise be said in several different ways.

The feature could be particularly useful when a product is promoted across regions and languages. A short audio guide is one way to keep a locally rooted name while making it easier to use in conversation.

What the update says about Arattai

The announcement comes as Indian technology companies continue to build software for a broad mix of users and languages. Messaging apps compete not only on features, but also on ease of use and the sense that a service understands its audience.

The pronunciation control is a narrow change, so it should not be confused with a larger product overhaul. It does, however, signal that Zoho is paying attention to how people encounter the brand as well as how they use the app.

More broadly, it highlights a design question for companies with multilingual audiences: how can an app preserve a name’s original language while helping people from other backgrounds feel included?

In this case, the answer is a simple audio interaction. Whether users adopt it widely remains to be seen, but it gives Arattai a direct way to explain its name inside the product itself.
