Skyroot Makes History as Vikram-1 Breaks Into Orbit

Skyroot Aerospace has achieved a landmark for India’s private space sector, sending Vikram-1 into low Earth orbit on its maiden flight.

Skyroot Makes History as Vikram-1 Breaks Into Orbit

India’s private space sector took a huge leap forward when Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 became India’s first privately developed orbital rocket to reach low Earth orbit. It was launched from Sriharikota on July 18, 2026, as a part of Mission Aagaman and released payloads into an orbit nearly450 kilometres above Earth.

This milestone made Skyroot the first Indian private company to design, develop and launch an orbital rocket from Indian territory. India also becomes only the third country in the world, following of course America and China, to demonstrate orbital-launch capability from a private company.

Maiden flight succeeds

Vikram-1 lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 12:05 p.m. IST after a brief countdown delay. The rocket followed its planned flight profile and completed its first orbital mission successfully.

The test flight was intended to validate:

  • Propulsion systems.
  • Avionics.
  • Guidance and navigation.
  • Telemetry.
  • Stage separation.
  • Payload deployment.
  • Orbital operations.

Payloads deployed

It carried six payloads and in-orbit experiments, including Skyroot’s SCOPE satellite and a Solaras satellite from Grahaa Space, as well as an EMBRACE robotic-arm payload developed by Cosmoserve Space.

The rocket went on to deliver the payloads to a low Earth orbit with an inclination of roughly 60 degrees. Technology demonstrations were also aboard the upper stage, including one by German company DCUBED.

From Vikram-S to Vikram-1

That’s followed by the Vikram-S mission, which flew Skyroot’s first privately developed Indian rocket to a suborbital flight in 2022 and was the first of its kind to reach space. That achievement is a milestone with Vikram-1, which takes things further by being able to establish a stable orbit and deploy satellites.

The difference is considerable: an orbital rocket has to travel at a much higher velocity, and it needs to do careful guidance, staging and payload release maneuvers in order for spacecraft to remain in orbit instead of falling back down into the atmosphere.

Why it matters

The successful mission shows that an Indian private company can perform an end-to-end orbital launch. This could accelerate the development of India’s commercial space industry and attract more investment in launch vehicles, satellite manufacturing and space-based services.

Potential benefits include:

  • Dedicated launches for small satellites.
  • More opportunities for Indian space startups.
  • Domestic production of advanced propulsion systems.
  • New commercial launch contracts.
  • Faster access to low Earth orbit.
  • Greater participation by private industry.

Commercial opportunity

Vikram-1 is primarily targeted at the small-satellite market. A focused, ongoing launch service may be ideal for customers working on Earth-observation, communications and scientific and technology-demonstration satellites that could otherwise wait the seconds necessary to fly on capacity available with a larger rocket.

While the maiden flight has yielded meaningful data regarding performance, Skyroot will have to prove repeatability and reliability at a price point that allows it to pad out regular commercial launches.

Government–private cooperation

While Vikram-1 was developed by Skyroot, the mission itself launched from ISRO’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre. With economic growth, the national launch infrastructure, range-safety systems and regulatory support is still integral as India opens more avenues for private players in space exploration.

The mission is an example of how public infrastructure and private engineering can combine to enhance India’s total launch capacity.

What comes next

It is expected that Skyroot will evaluate the flight data and leverage it for subsequent Vikram-1 missions. More successful launches will be needed to prove out the vehicle as a reliable commercial vehicle.

Other larger launch vehicles designed to lift greater payloads are part of the wider Vikram family at ISRO. Thus, the success of Vikram-1 could lay the foundations for more challenging private launch systems.

A landmark for India

Vikram-1 success full flight — A milestone for Skyroot Aerospace and Indian space jaunt. It launched private Indian payloads into orbit and proved that a domestic startup can design, develop, manufacture and operate an orbital launch vehicle.

The mission represents a further move to make India’s space sector less of a mono-culture with government agencies and private companies working together in developing launch vehicles, satellites and even future space infrastructure.
