Meta's strategy chief Dave Wehner is reportedly moving to AI startup Fireworks, highlighting the growing competition for experienced leadership in the artificial intelligence industry.

Dave Wehner, Meta’s chief strategy officer and former chief financial officer, is leaving the company to join AI startup Fireworks as its CFO. The move adds a senior technology executive to a company working on infrastructure for open AI models.

Wehner announced the change in a post on X, saying he had become increasingly optimistic about the startup’s opportunity.

Fireworks provides services for running and training AI models, with an emphasis on open-source models. Wehner is expected to oversee finance as the company works to expand.

A long tenure at Meta

Wehner joined Facebook, now Meta, in 2012. He served as CFO from 2014 to 2022 and later became chief strategy officer.

That period included rapid growth in digital advertising and major spending on new technology initiatives. Meta COO Javier Olivan praised Wehner’s contribution to the company’s growth and strategic decisions, according to the report.

His move takes him from a large publicly traded company to a much smaller venture-backed business. The change reflects a broader trend in which established executives are joining startups as artificial intelligence companies compete to build products and infrastructure.

Fireworks’ role in the AI market

Fireworks allows developers and businesses to customise, train and run open AI models. The company was founded in 2022 by former Meta and Google employees and has attracted backing from investors including Nvidia and Sequoia Capital, according to the report.

The startup was valued at $17.5 billion in a Series D funding round in July. The company has also reportedly held early discussions about another funding round that could value it between $30 billion and $40 billion. Those discussions are not the same as a completed financing or confirmed valuation.

The market for AI infrastructure is expanding quickly, but it is also competitive. Startups in the space face established cloud providers and large AI companies that can invest heavily in computing, research and customer relationships.

Leadership amid rapid expansion

A finance chief at a fast-growing startup may need to balance investment in computing capacity with the costs of building products and supporting customers. That work becomes more complex when a company is scaling quickly and investor expectations are rising.

Wehner’s experience at Meta could be useful as Fireworks grows, though his appointment alone does not guarantee commercial success. The company will still need to show that customers want its services and that it can compete on performance, reliability and price.

The move follows another challenge for Fireworks. In October, the company disclosed a security incident involving unauthorised use of internal credentials. The company said its investigation found no evidence that customer models, datasets, training data, personal information or inference traffic had been accessed.

Wehner’s decision puts a spotlight on the appeal of AI infrastructure roles to veteran executives. It also underlines the stakes for companies like Fireworks: they must turn strong interest and funding into dependable services that businesses can use at scale.
