India’s AI Computing to Triple to 100,000 GPUs for a Digital Future

India accelerates its AI ambitions with plans to expand GPU computing capacity. This will power AI apps for millions and drive technological growth across sectors.

India’s AI Computing to Triple to 100,000 GPUs for a Digital Future

India will almost triple its artificial intelligence computing capacity to over 100,000 Graphics Processing Units in the next few years at an unparalleled pace of AI deployment over sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, and environmental regulation. With some 38,000 GPUs, India’s compute power demand will exceed 100,000 GPUs as AI deployment scales, demonstrating a massive boost in the country’s domestic AI infrastructure and resource development.

Expanding AI Compute Capacity

Today, Abhishek Singh, CEO of IndiaAI Mission and Additional Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, stated that the availability is about 38,000 units, which is significantly lower than global rates. Moreover, the cost of a GPU hour is just Rs 65 compared to $2.5-$3 in other markets. However, the Government and private sector are committed to the significant investment required to ramp up the capacity. For example, the cost to build an infrastructure block of 1,000 GPUs, including data center and power facilities, is between Rs 500 crore and Rs 800 crore. Another official emphasized that India’s ambition is to make AI technology available to all 1.4 billion people, including the 500 million currently outside the digital economy.

IndiaAI Mission and Strategic Initiatives

Central to this networked expansion is the IndiaAI Mission, established in March 2024, with resources worth over ₹10,300 crore. The central goal of the mission is to establish a distributed AI compute network comprising over 10,000 GPUs across the country. This networked infrastructure supports multiple startups, research sites, and Government bodies in developing AI applications that meet the needs and interests of the Indian people. The mission is not only about developing AI but also about creating an open culture of AI access through voice-enabled resources in multiple local languages. The mission substantially boosts the productivity and wages of a large portion of the population currently excluded from the digital economy.

Public-Private Partnership and Data Center Growth

Most recent advancements have been achieved through public-private collaborations. Yotta Data Services, for example, collaborated with Nvidia to release blocks of GPUs, helping expand India’s GPU capacity. As of 2017, India’s data center capacity was 200 megawatts; as of today, it is 1.4 gigawatts, and by 2030, it is expected to reach 3.0 gigawatts. Nevertheless, India will require considerably more capacity; moreover, this suggests up to 50 times more to support a population-scale digital AI service in the indeterminate future.

AI Applications for Indian Challenges

India’s drive to expand its AI infrastructure is not simply about numbers; it is aimed at solving India’s unique set of problems. AI models trained on the country’s languages and contexts are designed to affect sectors of the economy, such as health, agriculture, and judicial administration. By deploying AI products, the Government is set to experience and record increases in productivity, efficiency, and, most of all, the quality of life, which in turn will lead to GDP growth and improvements in socio-economic standards of living. The IndiaAI Mission, for example, aims to create homegrown foundational AI models—locally developed, customized models—rather than using generic global models in a multilingual, diverse context like India.

Preparing the Workforce and Industry Transformation

Finally, the scale-up in GPU and AI infrastructure will see a commitment to transforming the IT services sector. Six million people work in coding-centric jobs in India, motivating IT companies to build AI code-generation tools to compete on a larger, global stage. Initiatives abound in this field, such as AMD’s project to train 100,000 Indian graduates in AI and GPU programming in three years. Thus, the necessary human capital will be developed for the future, powered by AI.

With vigorous Government support, public-private partnerships, and continued focus on accelerated local AI development, the measure will enable AI to reach a tipping point and deliver benefits across applications, bringing India to the pole position in the global AI arena, where leadership comes with utilization and technological leadership in several areas.
