India to Launch Vyommitra: First Humanoid Robot in December 2025 Spaceflight Test

India is on course to achieve a historic first, with ISRO preparing for Gaganyaan’s Test Flight in December 2025. During this time, they will send a humanoid Robot named “Vyommitra” into space. This half-humanoid, AI-driven robot will play a key role in spacecraft safety and system checks before it is launched on its historic mission to the Indian space station as part of India’s planned human spaceflight mission.

Vyommitra: India’s Half-Humanoid Space Robot

Named Vyommitra, which is derived from the Sanskrit words “Vyoma” (space) and “Mitra” (friend), it is a half-humanoid robot developed entirely in-house by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), primarily at its Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and the Central Tools and Training Centre, both headquartered in Bhubaneswar. It features an upper body, with arms and a head, but no legs in its first iteration. Being billed as an “almost-human robot —in human physiology and activity, the visual asset is armed with machine learning and natural language processing capabilities to respond to even generic queries and can also converse in English and Hindi.

The robot can operate control panels, conduct system checks, including radiation level measurements, and even be equipped with sensors to monitor the environment or life support systems (temperature, humidity, oxygen) for warnings. By mimicking human stress responses and making routine or anomaly-related decisions on its own, Vyommitra is a crucial training tool for human spaceflight, yielding valuable insights into how spacecraft operate and safety systems behave in microgravity.

Role in the Gaganyaan Mission

Vyommitra is set to fly on the first uncrewed test mission of India’s Gaganyaan mission called Gaganyaan-1, currently targeted for December 2025. The mission will allow testing of avionics, environmental control, and life support systems, as well as module structure, ahead of the first human flight of the Shenzhou human-crewed spacecraft, or “vyomanauts,” into space, with follow-on missions planned from early 2027.

Vyommitra will monitor the crew systems, helping ISRO mitigate the risks of sending humans into space. The information generated about how the systems work in a humanlike context is critical for refining hardware, software, and mission protocols to protect future astronauts. Vyommitra’s performance will set the stage for the country’s bid to enter the select league of nations with indigenous human spaceflight capabilities.

Technological and National Significance

India is leading the way in fusing advanced robotics and artificial intelligence with space exploration with the launch of Vyommitra. It demonstrates the nation’s dedication to developing its own space technologies and its growing technological proficiency in human-rated space systems.

The mission is part of a larger plan presented by ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan, which underscores India’s growing prominence in space exploration by setting lofty goals, such as crewed lunar missions by 2040 and an Indian national space station by 2035.

Conclusion

Suppose Vyommitra’s launch happens in December 2025. In that case, India will not only test its capability for the safe transportation of humans to space but also formally usher in an age in which intelligent–robotic precursors (and helpers) of human space missions play an important role. This half-humanoid robot will represent a crucial step in the Gaganyaan programme — testing, learning, and furthering India’s space dreams.
