Hormuz Chokehold: Iran’s Doomsday Gamble or Regime’s Final Nail?

As the Strait Squeezes Global Oil, Tehran's Islamic Republic Teeters on Collapse—Is This the Spark That Ends 47 Years of Theocracy?

Hormuz Chokehold: Iran’s Doomsday Gamble or Regime’s Final Nail?

Iran’s “Hormuz chokehold”—a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz dating back to late February 2026—signifies a last-bid escalation amidst military failures and economic downfall. Although this will disrupt 20-25% of global oil trade, driving prices and shortages through the roof, and worsening the economic mismanagement that has caused the Iranian economy to implode, it may actually hasten internal pressures upon the Islamic Republic rather than ensure its continued existence.

Strait’s Strategic Role

The Strait of Hormuz is a 33-km-wide narrow passage shipping lane that divides Iran from the controlling maritime nations of Oman and the UAE, through which about 20% of world oil and 20% of LNG are shipped daily. It has given Iran its southern bank from where Iran can impact on all the vessels coming to the south shore from 1957 onwards. Mines on the shore, drones and inspection of vessels have reduced the traffic by 90% at times.

Some pro-Iran vessels will be cleared or given “tolls” before passing, others will be attacked, generally those who were heading to China or India

Crisis Timeline

February 28th, 2026: US and Israeli Operation Epic Fury airstrikes wipe out Ayi Khameni and much of Iran military (and many Nuclear sites) After Iran responded with missiles on the Tel Aviv area, on U.S. bases in Iraq and on its Gulf allies, the GC closed the strait on March 2 through threats and crop attacks.

Iran did not keep the border with Pakistan in April, when not only did Israel strike Lebanon often, but a short ceasefire that brought Pakistan and Iran briefly together also failed, leading Trump to place a US naval blockade shortly after on April 13.

Economic Fallout

Oil prices have gone up a lot, and Asia has been struck the worst. India and China are running out of oil because vessels are stuck. Insurers stopped covering the problem, making it worse. Iran’s Goreh-Jask pipeline bypass only helps a little at ~300,000 b/d.

Military Dynamics

Iran’s regular army is in bad shape, with 90% fewer missile and drone attacks, but Hormuz’s might stays strong through asymmetric tactics. Trump threatens to attack infrastructure, while Iran warns that the situation could develop worse in the area, with Gulf oil and desalination plants as targets.

Internal Vulnerabilities

Protests against inflation and sanctions before the war in 2025–2026 drew millions of people and killed almost 30,000. When Khamenei died, there were celebrations and protests, but no mass defections. Opposition groups like Reza Pahlavi call for strikes that don’t hurt civilians.
Regime networks stay strong even while they are being repressed.

Regime’s Future?

The chokehold buys time but makes Iran more isolated. Its proxies are getting weaker, its economy is crashing, and the US is pushing for nuclear and missile limits as well as the end of proxy support. Betting markets say there is a low chance of collapse by mid-2026; it is likely to survive through repression and relations with China, but a long blockade could be too much.
Hormuz is testing Tehran’s strength, not its end—yet.
