The USD 2.3 billion Techo International Airport (TIA) is Cambodia’s largest [airport] and also the most ambitious to date. This new airport is considered a game changer for Cambodia’s tourist industry and the country’s connectivity within the region, after its stint as an aviation hub while waiting in for the vacancy of 50 million passengers at angkor Airports.

Inauguration and Strategic Importance

At $2.3 billion, the Techo International Airport (TIA) is Cambodia’s biggest so far — and its most ambitious. angkor International Airport The new airport will revolutionise Cambodia’s tourist scene and insurgency status within the region, following a period of acting as an aviation hub while waiting on for 50 million passengers at angkor Airports.

Features and Infrastructure

A gem of an airport with two 4 KM runways to handle the larger long haul international flights together with all types of aircraft, I predict Cambodia will be placed on a higher level of world aviation map. Situated in southern Kandal and Takeo provinces, some 20-30 kilomtretres south of Phnom Penh it is spread over an area of approximately 2,600 hectares.

Construction and Future Prospects

The project began in 2020 and was constructed by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation. In the first phase, the airport could handle 13 million passengers and it would be possible to expand to 30 million by 2030 and then to 50 million by 2050.

Economic and Regional Impact

Officials are counting on the new airport to serve as a key entrance point for tourists heading to well-known destinations such as Siem Reap and foreign investment in Cambodia. It should encourage Phnom Penh to be the centre for regional development, and for Cambodia’s role in Asean economic integration.

Challenges and Outlook

Although there was positive news for the industry, Cambodia’s tourism hit a bump late this year when anti-human trafficking operations involving online scams led to the decline in tourist figures. The airport’s opening is another of those long-term strategies for Cambodia, a step closer to modern industry—and keeping the wheels of economic growth turning.

“The Techo International Airport represents Cambodia’s forward momentum… and future ambitious as a rising center for aviation and tourism in the heart of South East Asia.”
