ISRO Validates New Parachute and Engine Systems for Gaganyaan

New parachute and engine validations bring ISRO another step closer to India’s first crewed spaceflight, strengthening safety and mission readiness.

ISRO Validates New Parachute and Engine Systems for Gaganyaan

Crucial qualification work related to Gaganyaan’s parachute and propulsion systems have been completed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) ahead of India’s first crewed space flight. The test flights will validate the crew module’s parachute-based deceleration system, qualify a human-rated CE20 cryogenic engine and ground-test a new solid motor for the SOLVE test vehicle.

Parachute system validated

Gaganyaan crew module employes a 10 parachute-based system made from apex-cover separation parachutes, drogues, pilot and main parachutes. These combine to stabilize and decelerate the capsule through atmospheric reentry, culminating in splashdown. isro.

All 10 parachutes had successfully deployed in a planned sequence during the second Integrated Air Drop Test on April 2026, at Sriharikota. The simulated crew module successfully touched down, and was recovered with the help of the Indian Navy.

Main parachute qualification

Work on the critical integrated main-parachute airdrop test was also carried out by ISRO at the Babina Field Firing Range in Madhya Pradesh. To simulate the maximum expected loads on a crew module, as anticipated to be experienced during its flight through the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds, a crew-module assembly was released from an aircraft flying at an altitude of just over 2.5 kilometres high, during the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission (G1) testing phase.

The test assessed:

  • Structural integrity.
  • Load distribution.
  • Deployment timing.
  • Descent stability.
  • Performance under asymmetric disreefing.
  • Safe touchdown behaviour.

The successful test provided additional confidence in the main parachute system’s readiness for G1.

Drogue parachutes tested

In order to stabilise the crew module and slow it down before deploying the main para-chutes, tests were conducted of drogues, which are small parachutes that deployed on December 18 and 19 at the Rail Track Rocket Sled facility of Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh.

Both of those tests accomplished their goals and subsequently demonstrate that the drogue parachutes are able to function even with huge changes in flight conditions.

CE20 engine human-rated

The CE20 cryogenic engine that outfit the upper stage of the human rated LVM3 launch vehicle has reached successful completion of its human rating process with ISRO. The qualification program consisted of ground tests meant to confirm reliability, performance and safety for Gaganyaan missions.

It needs the CE20 engine to burn reliably in the upper stage phase of flight — used on top of its rocket stack to get the crew vehicle into orbit. Its certification is one of the last steps before astronauts can fly.

New engine-start method

In low-pressure ambitious and vacuum conditions, ISRO also demonstrated boot-strap start mode for the CE20 engine. It initiates the gas-generator-cycle engine without use of auxiliary stored-gas.

Thus, a multi-element igniter is employed in both the thrust chamber and gas generator. TESS showed a more simplified, autonomous engine-start sequence that could be used for future missions.

SOLVE solid motor tested

India’s new solid motor for ISRO’s Sub-Orbital Launch Vehicle for Experiments, or SOLVE, passed its first ground testlab in Sriharikota by July 3, 2026. The motor behaved as expected during the experiment

SOLVE is the partnered launching process to build a sole facility for all integrated parachute tests. This will enable ISRO to drop a crew-module test article from a sub-orbital path and assess parachute performance in conditions approaching full spaceflight.

Why SOLVE matters

Air-drop tests can validate parachute deployment and descent behaviour, but a sub-orbital vehicle can reproduce additional conditions such as:

  • High-speed ascent.
  • Separation from a launch vehicle.
  • Weightlessness before descent.
  • Re-entry loads.
  • Realistic aerodynamic heating.
  • Mission-specific deployment timing.

The SOLVE motor is based on a modified PSLV strap-on motor. Changes include a slower-burning propellant, a straight nozzle and secondary-injection thrust-vector control to steer the vehicle.

Supports Gaganyaan G1

Milestones regarding the parachute and engine support G1 directly in terms of the timeline for the first uncrewed Gaganyaan flight. The test will check the crew module, service module, launch vehicle, orbital operations, re-entry and parachute deployment and recovery — all without any astronauts on board.

G1 data and a flaunt of uncrewed missions will help diagnose fix any problems before the crewed flight.

Safety through redundancy

The parachute architecture of Gaganyaan has redundancy, so that crew module can make a safe descent even when one parachute does not function as desired. This is critical, because parachutes will not necessarily always deploy at the same time in an actual emergency or during the re-enter sequence.

This method accounts for the increased safety standards required in human-rated spacecraft.

Broader propulsion readiness

The CE20 qualification is the first phase of a broader human-rating effort for the LVM3. Test-firing its solid boosters and liquid core stage, plus a cryogenic upper stage capable of launching human beings, are required to show that (1) the launch vehicle operates reliably; and (2) does so in fully crew-escape and abort systems.

ISRO is also working on new propulsion technologies such as semi cryogenic engines for upcoming heavy lift vehicles. While these systems are not directly the initial emerging launch engines for Gaganyaan, they may backload future human-spaceflight and space-station missions.

Final qualification still required

While successful parachute test and engine tests are vital milestones, they alone do not complete Gaganyaan certification. The systems integration and end-to-end mission tests along with results analysis and demonstration of reliable operation over the entire flight sequence must be undertaken by ISRO.

HiFlyer is part of a test campaign for Blue Origin’s New Shepard programme, which aims at gradually building confidence before astronauts are inserted into the spacecraft.

A crucial step toward human spaceflight

India made strides toward crewed orbital flight with the validation of Gaganyaan parachute and engine systems. While the crews of the module date true pull recovery, CE20 qualification test establish ready of one key LVM3 propulsion system. isro. gov+2

These successes, along with the SOLVE programme and upcoming uncrewed missions, take Gaganyaan closer to its core goal of launching Indian astronauts into low earth orbit (LEO) and bringing them back to Earth safely.
