New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has been spearheading the nationwide campaign to eradicate tuberculosis by calling citizens, public representatives, businesses and community organisations to team up with the government in making Delhi and India TB-free again.
Speaking at a sensitization workshop for public representatives in New Delhi, Gupta said tuberculosis cannot be eradicated by government action alone. She called for the TB-Free India campaign to be a movement with mass public participation, involving each and every section of the society.
Public participation is essential
The chief minister urged the MPs, MLAs, councillors, resident welfare associations (RWAs), religious institutions and corporate groups, trade bodies and civil-society organisations to join hands in helping TB patients and avowing the message within their own communities.
Elected representatives, she said, have to play a crucial role in making TB-related information reach every ward, Assembly constituency and locality. She said increased public engagement on the issue will help in detecting patients early as well as supporting – or pushing – them to complete their treatment.
Our campaign message highlights that “TB elimination is not only the work of hospitals and doctors. And you need community support too, because stigma, poverty and treatment inertia are very real challenges for patients.
Call to become Nikshay Mitras
One of the central themes of CM’s appeal was Nikshay Mitra where individuals, corporates and institutions voluntarily support TB patients — both nutritionally and socially.
While becoming Nikshay Mitras, Gupta said more citizens and institutions should come forward to support such patients in their treatment journey. According to her, this is very encouraging & positive as 3,300 Nikshay Mitras are already working in Delhi and she has distributed more than 1.2 lakh nutritional food baskets to the TB Pat concise table on ‘healthier lives through nutrition for tuberculosis patients’ at the world health assembly.
The program is made to help more than with food. Community supporters can also restore patients confidence and minimize isolation by offering his/her support and ensuring her/him stay connected with health-care services.
Focus on early diagnosis
The Delhi government’s campaign places strong emphasis on early diagnosis. Health officials and community workers are being encouraged to promote screening among people who may be at higher risk of tuberculosis or who show symptoms associated with the disease.
Common symptoms may include:
- Persistent cough lasting two weeks or more.
- Fever, particularly in the evening.
- Night sweats.
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Loss of appetite.
- Weakness and fatigue.
- Chest pain or difficulty breathing.
People experiencing such symptoms should seek medical advice and undergo testing rather than self-medicate or ignore the warning signs. Early diagnosis helps patients begin treatment sooner and reduces the risk of transmission to family members and others in the community.
Treatment completion remains critical
The Chief Minister also emphasized the need to complete the entire course of treatment. Though patients start to feel better within weeks, stopping the medicines too early can allow the infection to return and lead to drug-resistant tuberculosis.
Providing support and assistance to ensure that patients can adhere to treatment as prescribed by physicians is therefore an important role for healthcare workers, families and community volunteers. Treatment outcomes can be better with support with follow-up visits, medication adherence, nutrition and counselling.
The campaign also aims to lower the stigma surrounding TB. He advocated for treating the citizens and patients humanely instead of shunning or discriminating.
Delhi reports strong notification performance
As on 29 October 2023, the Delhi government claims to have crossed over 95 per cent of its annual TB notification target, indicating greater success in identifying and reporting cases through the public health system.
Why TB notification: it allows health authorities to trace patients, support them with treatment and monitor their progress over several districts. It also helps officials see where they may need further screening, awareness programmes or healthcare resources.
Nevertheless, alone action figures notification could not defeat the disease. Building on your success requires that you test early and often, provide reliable treatment and nutritional support, as well as tap into social supports that can help keep people healthy.
Role of local communities
The campaign calls on local institutions to make TB awareness part of everyday community activity. Resident welfare associations, schools, workplaces, religious bodies and social organisations can help spread accurate information and direct people towards testing facilities.
Community groups can contribute by:
- Organising awareness meetings and health camps.
- Encouraging people with symptoms to seek testing.
- Supporting patients who need nutritional assistance.
- Helping families understand treatment requirements.
- Combating myths and discrimination related to TB.
- Encouraging patients to complete their prescribed treatment.
Such efforts can be especially valuable in densely populated areas, where delayed diagnosis and crowded living conditions may increase the risk of transmission.
Government and society must work together
The Delhi government has said the TB-Free India mission needs the involvement of public representatives, healthcare professionals, field workers and civil-society groups as well as citizens. The sensitisation workshop was meant to fortify this coordination and motivate elected representatives to champion TB related activities at their constituency level.
Participants also took a collective pledge at the programme to raise awareness, facilitate timely testing and treatment of TB patients, get more people on board under Nikshay Mitra and join hands for a TB-free Delhi & India.
A campaign beyond healthcare
The new campaign describes tuberculosis in terms that are not just medical, but also as a community and social problem. Diagnostic facilities and medicines are very important, but patients also need support for their emotions, nutrition and protection from stigma.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has pointed out that she is looking to take the TB elimination campaign out of government offices and hospitals by appealing citizens to actively participate in it. Success of the initiative will depend on continued promotion to ensure awareness converts into testing, treatment initiation and completion, and support for vulnerable patients.
Clearly, for the Delhi model to work in eliminating TB, government programmes have to work in sync with community action. The campaign’s message is pretty blunt: fighting tuberculosis will not be enough, it needs public engagement to last.
