Iran’s Oil Shockwave Hits India: First Crude in 7 Years Amid US Waiver Drama!

Iranian crude oil arrived on Indian shores for the first time in almost seven years, even as the global energy space wrestles with supply disruptions and geopolitical friction in West Asia. Two VLCCs, Felicity and Jaya on 29 May arrived at Indian ports, marking the tentative restart of New Delhi’s long-dormant trade with Tehran’s oil industry.

What happened and where

So far in early April 2026, two Iranian crude‑loaded VLCCs have arrived at Indian ports.

  • The Felicity — which sails under the Iran flag and is owned by National Iranian Tanker Company — reached off Sikka in Gujarat this week after loading around 2 million barrels from Kharg Island mid‑March.
  • The Jaya, which flies the Curacao flag, approached Paradip in Odisha with a comparable amount of Iranian crude.

The two vessels together carry about 4 million barrels of Iranian oil, representing the first confirmed shipment of Iranian crude into India since imports were banned in 2019.

Why Iran‑origin crude is back now

India’s resumption of group Iranian imports comes amid worsening global oil, with ongoing conflict in West Asia and disruption close to the Strait of Hormuz.

  • The U.S. has allowed a 30-day sanctions waiver specifically on Iranian crude and refined products, enabling purchasers of Iranian crude that are already in transit to receive the oil, or for it to be received under narrowly defined parameters.

  • Indian refiners, including state‑owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), have seized that window to capitalize on discounted Iranian grades which suit domestic refinery configurations.

Indian crude imports under the special waiver had been formally resumed, government officials have said, adding there are no payment hurdles for these Iranian purchases.

Geopolitics and US stance

The US exemption, although temporary, has been dressed up as a short‑term fix to global supply constraints rather than a long‑term overturning of pressure on Iran.

  • The waiver will expire on 19 April 2026, but Iranian exchanges of cargoes that are already in transit or are covered by the exemption may be subject to restrictions again.
  • Earlier in the month, another tanker, Ping Shun, carrying about 600.000 barrels of Iran`s crude bound for Vadinar diverted to China, reportedly over complications involving payment under the sanctions regime.

Analysts view the current flow as a “limited-window” opportunity for India rather than a full-scale return to volumes seen before 2019, barring wider diplomatic or sanctions shifts that might follow.

How India’s oil‑import structure has changed

Iran’s oil used to account for over 11–12 per cent of India’s total imports, at its highest around 2018 when it was one of Iran’s top crude buyers. awazthevoice+1

  • Washington’s sanctions squeezes and withdrawal of previous waivers effectively halted imports from Iran in May 2019, prompting New Delhi to seek alternative suppliers.
  • Since then, India has heavily diversified towards Russia, the US and other producers like Brazil and Nigeria and ramped up LNG and LPG purchases from a broader set of countries.

Now with Iranian trade opening up again, India is balancing its energy‑security interests against the possibility of sanctions by American-linked powers and also increasing imports from Venezuela and other non-traditional suppliers.

Price, volumes, and market implications

Iranian crude generally trades at a discount to global benchmarks and is therefore attractive for Indian refiners, even with complicated payment-and-despatch arrangements.

  • Even before the sanctions, India imported more than half a million barrels of oil a day from Iran, blending light and heavy Iranian grades to fit its refinery docket.
  • Latest indications are that well over 100 million barrels of Iranian crude remain on water — nearly half reportedly bound for India if sanctions‑related uncertainties can be resolved in its case.

The reappearance of Iranian crude in India, in the short run will definitely place some downward pressure on premiums and freight costs for competing grades to that region especially South Asia.

Broader strategic signals

Appointments of Iranian crude to the east and west coasts arriving simultaneously stress a calculated choice by Indian refiners and policymakers to explore how doable it is to re‑integrate Iran into the supply chain.

  • An Iranian LPG cargo also arrived in Mangalore earlier in April, according to the government, a testament to energy trade is being cautiously revived beyond crude.
  • But Indian officials are wary to project long low term dependence on Tehran, given the unpredictability of US sanctions and the broader Middle East security landscape.

With the April 19 waiver deadline looming, it will be weeks before it is clear whether these shipments are a one‑off relief measure or the start of a more sustained re-examination of the India-Iran relationship on energy.
