Artemis II was NASA’s successful return to sending people into deep space, with the Orion spacecraft safely bringing passengers home after flying around the moon. Inside Orion, new safety systems protected the crew from the most dangerous part of the mission: a violent reentry that created intense heat that was as hot as it was during the Apollo period.

Reentry Challenges

In some respects, Orion blasted back to Earth at greater than 24,000 mph (11 km/s), faster than Apollo missions, and generated a shock wave with plasma temperatures exceeding 10,000°C (17,600°F)—twice the surface temperature of the Sun. With some exposure to the world outside and the design changes that Orion made, this caused the highest cursive heating after Apollo to date, rising on the heatshield surface up and approaching 3,000°C (5,000°F) as kinetic energy has to be compressed into friction.

It caused a six-minute radio blackout, a point in time of added tension as ground teams listened in silence.

Heat Shield Protection

Similar to Apollo but re-formulated with venting gases, Orion’s controllable AVCOAT ablative heat shield charred, eroded, and radiated heat away, ensuring the capsule’s interior stayed below 120°C (248°F). After Artemis I, NASA decided not to replace the shield—avoiding 18 months of delay—despite some unexpected loss of char from trapped gases during an early “skip” reentry test, and reprofiled Orion’s trajectory to a steeper direct-entry angle instead. With over 100 tests and modeling verifying AVCOAT permeability from no cracks with this shorter, hotter path (with higher peak heating but less total exposure).

Crew Survival Systems

Orion’s controllable AVCOAT ablative heat shield, as was the case with Apollo only re-formulated venting gases, charred, eroded and radiated heat away to keep the capsule’s interior temperature below 120°C (248°F). NASA did not replace the shield after Artemis I even though some char loss was seen in trapped gases during an early “skip” reentry test — an approach that would have added 18 months of delay — and reprofiled Orion’s trajectory instead to be steeper for direct-entry. This shorter, hotter path (higher peak heating, but less integrated exposure) — with no cracks — has been verified from over 100 tests and modeling predicting the AVCOAT permeability.

Parachute and Recovery Sequence

After peaking at 400,000 feet, drogue parachutes opened at 22,000 feet followed by three mains at 6,000 feet, slowing Orion to 20 mph for splashdown in the Pacific near San Diego on April 11, 2026. Windsurfing Navy divers from USS John P. Murtha secured the capsule with anchors and collars, pumping out the crew via raft and helicopter to cheers—the Navy’s first NASA recovery since 1975.

Mission Success Insights

After the flight, examinations showed that the heat shield worked within acceptable limits, making Orion ready for Artemis III even if the circumstances were hotter than low-Earth returns. Radiation sensors and cabin shielding had already worked well on the way out, and there were no solar events that needed the “storm shelter” to be changed.
