The military modernisation push of $25 billion in India is not a single shopping spree but an effort to prepare the armed forces for multi-domain, high-tempo wars. This clearest signal is for an accelerated air defence, strike capacity, mobility and indigenous procurement to bridge the capability gaps highlighted by recent operational realities.
What the package covers
The approved package includes transport aircraft, remotely piloted strike aircraft and Russian-made S-400 air-defence systems, as well as coastal surveillance, ammunition and reconnaissance-related equipment. Another report points out that approvals related to reinforcements of the Army, Air Force and Coast Guard together show that it is a combined plan for not one service.
Now this is important because lanes are not how modern wars are fought. All of them — air defence, drones, precision strike, maritime surveillance and rapid logistics — now operate as a single integrated system, and India seems to be buying for that system, not individual platforms.
Why now
India’s larger drive about defence has a place with strain on the northern and western borders, as additionally in the Indian Sea region, where fight is expanding. The real future Indian advantage will lie in whether this $25 billion converts to an actual kill chain — improved sensors, faster decisions, improved air defence, precision strike options and better logistics. If that happens, it becomes even more difficult to surprise, suppress, and outmanoeuvre the armed forces.
